Memories & Candles
Cindy, It is with deep sadness that I write this, remembering Max a law school buddy of mine at the University of Texas School of Law. It was just minutes ago that I learned of his passing, after reading this summer’s publication of the law school’s “In Memoriam” section. I cannot believe that he's gone. I remember his campaign speech for the Law School’s position as an officer in the Chicano Law Students Association, when he stated, “I’m Max Madrid,

Cyndi, Our thoughts are with you. We know the kids from Cougar track, and it is so clear that Max was a great father (and you a wonderful mother) from meeting your children. I know the loss your family is going through is difficult, and I hope for your healing.

Estimado Amigo, Max III: Espero que en este tiempo tan dificil que nuestro Dios Jesus-Cristo te calme tu dolor. Te acompaño tús sentimientos!
I know how deeply you loved your son and above all how proud you were of him. You and I often talked about our Faith in Christ, and you also know now that your son Max is resting from his pain.
May the love of Jesus Christ be with you always,
Your old friend, Jesus Alfonso Esparza (San Antonio, TX)

I met Max long ago when he started eating at my family's restaurant, the Barelas Coffee House. He always made time to talk with my mom, Benita. He was friendly with everyone who worked there...just a great guy. Max was a "regular" so that made him part of the Barelas family. We were proud to see him become a successful man, husband, and father during those years. When he began his battle, we prayed for him. When we learned of

I concidentally met Max my very first day I started at Modrall as a Paralegal back in August, 2005. Wow, seems just like yesterday for me. He welcomed me, of course, and needed to know who I was working for and I was touched because he was making sure I would be taken care of. That was Max's way despite the fact that moments before, we were perfect strangers. That was the beginning of our friendship. I later met his

My word processing co-worker Luella would say, Max! Come back here! as she would have a question about his project, and Max would run out the door. I had the privilege of working with Max at Modrall, and it was never a dull moment working with him. Max was a good man and a good lawyer. Cyndi, your children, your family, may God keep all of you safe in his hands now.

Mike, Max, Earl and I all went to lunch at the Chama River Brewing Company.
We had all placed our orders and Max had asked the waiter what kind of sauces do you all have? The waiter replied" our chef made one of his own original recipe sauces last week, would you like to try it?" Max then asked, " Is it still good?" We couldn't help but laugh the look on the waiters face was that of confusion.....
